Change of Status

If you are already in the United States on a different visa type (tourist, work, etc.), you may be able to change your status to F-1 without leaving the country.

Who Can Apply?

You may be eligible to change your status to F-1 if you:

  • Are currently in the US in lawful non-immigrant status
  • Have not violated the conditions of your current visa
  • Have been accepted to a SEVIS-approved institution (like LADO)
  • Can demonstrate financial ability to support your studies

How to Apply

  1. Apply and receive acceptance from LADO
  2. LADO issues a new I-20 for change of status
  3. File Form I-539 (Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status) with USCIS
  4. Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee
  5. Await USCIS approval before beginning classes
Important Note: Immigration regulations can change. Always consult with LADO's Designated School Official (DSO) or an immigration attorney before making decisions about your visa status. LADO staff cannot provide legal immigration advice.
